“I';m going to miss you so much, Poppy, ";said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions(情绪)get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile.” I guess this is it, “he said.” I';ll see you back home in a month, okay?";His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy';s mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn';t seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn';t.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn';t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. ";What should we do to cheer Poppy up?";asked Dad. “We';ve tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy, “smiled Mom.” Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let';s get a little dog for Poppy.";
It didn';t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging(摆动)ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

 ; ; ; ; ; ; 【答案】Para 1.
; ; ; ; Dad put the box on the ground and opened the top. A shiny little wet nose popped up. Then two fluffy paws. Next the box tipped over sideways, and out tumbled a mass of wiggly golden silliness. Poppy was amazed. She wagged furiously. She barked with joy. She smiled, her tongue lolling out as she investigated the surprise. The little pup was not shy and immediately starting yipping and jumping around the older dog. “That didn’t take long,” remarked Mom, as both dogs went roaring around the house in an impromptu game of chase. Dad laughed.
Para 2.
; ; ; ; A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university. He had missed Poppy and was looking forward to seeing her. When he bent down to give her a big hug, he fell over in surprise as a small golden cloud came racing up to lick his face too. “Oh my gosh, who is this?” he exclaimed. His parents laughed at the look of shock on his face. “That’s Pee-wee,” said Dad. “I can’t believe you got yourselves a puppy!” “We didn’t,” replied Mom. “This puppy is for Poppy!”

(2018·浙江·高考真题)It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. ";The day starts at dawn on my farm,"; he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. ";Don’t be late for supper,"; Uncle Paul cried, ";and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!"; ";OK! "; my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.

【答案】
; ; ; ; ; ; Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. My horse turned to the left to avoid the little rabbit as I held on tightly and tried not to fall. Then my dad turned around and shouted, “Hold on!” All of a sudden the horse began to run. My dad tried to keep up behind us. For a few minutes my horse slowed down to a trot and then stopped beside a river. I looked around and realized that we were way off the track.
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Luckily the stars came out and gave us a little light when we were looking for the way to the farm house. After what must have been several hours, we suddenly heard the sound of sheep in the distance. My dad and I both rode our horses towards the sound of the sheep. As we got closer we saw Uncle Paul with a flashlight waving us over. What a night!

(2017·浙江·高考真题)
On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that';s a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of hear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac';s relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac';s bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶)。
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to show down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easy caught up and the wolf’s teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment, Paul and Beeky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

【答案】
; ; ; ; ; ; The car abruptly stopped in front of him. Paul and Becky got out of the car immediately to give the help. With nothing in the hand, they didn';t dare to fight against the wolf. However, they still approached to the wolf bravely. At the same time, the wolf also noticed them and turned its head back, howling angrily towards Paul and Becky. Mac then jumped off the bicycle and was ready to fight against the wolf. Then came the deadlock.
A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. They found the dangerous situation, where three men circled the wolf. Mac';s friends also jumped off their bicycles and joined the fight with the wolf. More and more cars stopped. Some drivers took out the sticks from the cars, and some took out the knives, even the guns towards the wolf. In the meanwhile, the wolf might feel the people';s threats around, so it began to step back slowly. Soon, it ran away off the road and disappeared in the distance.

The Biggest Dog on the Mountain
We liked hiking together. Today, we were looking for a trail over Wallace Mountain.
”It’s been over an hour,” said Jessc, my nineteen-year-old son. “Do you think the trail still exists?” We had explored several paths but with no luck. We pushed through weeds mid-calf high for us, but neck-high for our rusty-brown dog, Shadow. Once in a while, we would call Shadow back when she was attracted by the pleasant smell of flowers. No longer slim and bouncing with energy, Shadow was the size of a large house cat, and always content to curl up on the couch beside one of us.
Suddenly, we heard what sounded like many dogs barking in the distance, an unusual sound in the wilderness around us. Curious, we climbed the ridge (山脉), only to find what seemed like a dog factory. Small dogs, big dogs, brown dogs, and dogs I can’t even describe poured out. The hounds (猎狗) hit the ground, sniffing the air and turning to face us. Before long, they went down from their side of the mountain. Jesse shot an alarmed glance at me before turning to call in a firm voice, “Shadow, come here, stay.”
I patted my pockets, feeling for the pepper spray (防狼喷雾), so small it would never work against so many animals. I turned, surveying the nearby brush for a potential weapon. With the help of adrenaline (肾上腺素), I broke off two thick branches from a tree and rushed to Jesse’s side, “Here you are!” “OK,” he said, “Dad, they are coming to us.” My-mouth went dry. I glanced over at Jesse, his lips pinched (夹紧) tight.
The pack emerged from the valley, marching straight toward us. The dogs in the lead were now close enough for us to see that most of them were three times larger than Shadow. With deep growls (怒吼声),they ran straight for us. Jesse swallowed hard and looked at me.

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it.
The dog was about twelve weeks old. It had no collar(项圈) or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about posting an advertisement but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, its owners should have watched it more closely.
By the end of the week the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost—and—found section in the local paper. One particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart beat with fear for what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. They sounded extremely eager. My hand shook, couldn’t bring myself to pick up the paper.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement. I quickly put paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband.
By now we had named the dog. It looked like a Molly, so that was what we called it. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did the housework, it was there to lend a hand.
There was only one problem with this seemingly perfect picture: my conscience(良心)was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number in the paper and see if our Molly was the dog they were desperately seeking. It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.

My husband, Donald, took our daughter Sarah out for some ice cream the night before driving her to college. As they were walking back to the car, they saw a young man sitting on the ground and giving his puppy a cone.
“A cute dog,” Donald said as they walked by. “A free dog,” the young man replied. Donald asked him what he meant by that and the man explained. He was moving away from Vermont and did not think the travel would be good for the dog. He had raised her from a small puppy. The man said she was a 6-month-old cross between the Doberman and the Labrador named Rhubarb. Donald took his phone number. The rest, as they say, is history.
Rhubarb was a sweet dog and very friendly and loved everyone. Whenever someone came to the house, she was always happy. She also got along with Willie, an older Samoyed we had. Willie was not well and died about a year later, but, fortunately, Rhubarb’s company helped him keep going for longer than that if he had been alone. But the interesting thing about Rhubarb was that she never barked. She would sometimes get excited when she saw a chipmunk (花栗鼠) and make a little crying sound.
One hot night when she was about 4 years old, we went to bed with the windows open and the doors unlocked. At about 3 a.m., I woke up to the sound of Rhubarb barking. I woke Donald and we got out of bed.
Rhubarb was coming toward us. We turned on the lights and noticed the door to the kitchen was open. Then we saw the door leading into the house from the garage was also open. We quickly locked all the doors, and we did not get any sleep that night. It was deep into the night, so we didn’t call the police.

It was a lovely spring morning in the mountains of my home. Here was full of natural atmosphere. The sky was blue, the sun was warm, and the air was fresh. As driving along the winding road, I could see thousands of wild flowers in bloom. When I turned round, I slowed down as I saw some volunteers picking up garbage along the side of the road. I just smiled as I saw them doing some cleaning in spring for Mother Earth and my mind suddenly floated back in time to another spring morning long ago.
When my children were younger, I used to walk along a small route around the lake near my home. It was also on a spring morning that I noticed much garbage lying along the route. The next day, I brought a big garbage bag and started to slowly pick up the garbage along my way. All kinds of deserted objects lay all over the floor. There were pop cans, plastic water bottles, wrappers for candy bars, empty chip bags, pieces of broken fishing line and even an old shoe. Every time I stopped, I picked up a piece of garbage. And I even fished some garbage out of the edge of the water. By the time I circled the lake, the garbage bag had been nearly full.
Tired but happy, I put the bag in an empty garbage can. I stopped before I headed home and took one last look at the lake as the sun set. It looked more beautiful than ever and I felt like the angels were looking down upon it with me and sharing my smiles.
I always think that at times this world’s problems can seem overwhelming and you may wonder what you can do to make a difference. But the truth is that every good thing you do matters a lot! I do believe every time I stop to pick up a single piece of garbage, I can make a difference. As my children are adults now, I decide to spend more time protecting the environment.

Surviving Mount Rainier
Bad luck and poor timing left Kart and three climbers stuck on Mount Rainier for several long days. They faced mountain climbing’s toughest tests. One man suffered altitude sickness; ice and rockfall rained down at night; cold nights in a tent that got torn left them hypothermic(体温过低的). Calm confidence, skill and the courage to continue up the route, despite illness and injury, likely saved their lives.
The climbers set out on a Friday, camping low on the route the first night because they were concerned about rockfall after a climber had recently died in an accident at the route’s typical high camp. On Saturday, at about 10,500 feet, one of the climbers became sick from the altitude, which began to slow them down. They needed to keep moving, so they put him in the lead so he could move at a pace he was comfortable with.
By Sunday evening, the ill climber was exhausted, and they had to make an unplanned camp on steep snow. They were in a bad place—on a platform about the size of a table under an ice cliff. The wind got stronger during the night, ripping the tent and snapping the poles. They tried to secure it by placing their packs and rocks around the edges. Finally, they just stuck their feet between the rocks and held the tent with their bodies. It was a cold night.

John reached into his backpack, searching for his cell phone. He was scared of having to spend the spring break at Aunt Letty’s farm. Although he had protested, his parents decided that spending time on the farm would be a great experience for him. They grew up on a farm and believed that responsibility, hard work, and respect for the land were valuable lessons.
“So, have you ever ridden a horse?” Aunt Letty asked, trying to turn his attention away from his phone. “Hmmm, no.” he answered. “Well, we’ve got a nice calm horse I think you’ll like. Hercules — sounds like a beast, but he’s basically a gentle giant — big, but kindhearted!” she said, smiling. John glanced at his aunt, annoyed that he was expected to work. He tried to text a friend but there was no cell reception.
The next few days were busy. The crow of the roosters woke them up, and they had breakfast before dawn. Then they went out to the barn to get the feed while the animals waited to be fed. The afternoons were filled with transporting hay, cleanup, and caring for the animals. At dusk, when the farm was finally quiet, Aunt Letty stretched her arms out and inhaled (吸气), “Just take a deep breath of that sweet country air!” John, exhausted from his chores, was unable to appreciate his work.
On the third day, without warning, Aunt Letty announced, “It’s time to meet Hercules.” She led John into the stables (马厩). Aunt Letty was right. Hercules was remarkable!
Aunt Letty held her hand open for John to take. Reluctantly, he let her guide his hand toward Hercules and allowed the magnificent creature to sniff his palm. Softly, Hercules rubbed its nose and mouth against him.
“It feels like velvet (天鹅绒) !” John beamed(眉开眼笑). An hour later, John was scratching Hercules on his neck and offering him carrots.
That night, as they headed toward the house, John was inspired. His arms spreading wide, he inhaled and said, “Take a breath of that sweet country air!”

After a heart operation, I figured taking care of a dog would keep me active. So I went to the animal shelter, where a little dog in a cage caught my eye. Her name was Honey and she was five months old. The worker opened Honey’s cage and I picked her up. We both went to the yard where I picked up a ball and threw it. I sat down, watching Honey run after it. She ran back toward me, ball in mouth. Immediately, I filled out the paperwork and took Honey home.
One morning last year I decided to take Honey out with me. My wife was away for a few days and I didn’t want to leave Honey alone. I took my keys and opened the door of my car. Honey jumped into it and sat in the back seat.
I drove around the road slowly. Just then, a flash of sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to protect my eyes. I felt the car slipped in the soft soil, and rolled and rolled until I heard a horrible noise. A giant part of the roof hit my leg and chest. I was pinned. With a sharp pain in my chest, I looked over to find Honey was still in the back seat, trembling.
I tried to see if I could unpin myself, but I failed. I fetched my cell phone and dialed 911. Just as I’d feared, I couldn’t get a signal at the bottom of this valley. Robin, my closest neighbor, lived a quarter mile uphill from me. There was no reason she would drive up to my house.
My chest hammered. I reached into my pocket and pulled out the pills. I ate one and took a deep breath. My heartbeat slowed. I knew that I must get Honey out first. There was a hole in the driver’s side window, small but maybe enough. Painfully, I reached over and picked her up. I gently got her through it. I patted her and she jumped to the ground and ran up the side of the valley.

Once, there was a villager called Rajkumar, who was very greedy and loved to take risks. One sunny summer morning, Rajkumar decided to walk his sheep out of his village for grass. After leaving his village, Rajkumar led his sheep to a small hill, which was close to a big forest and far away from his village.
When reaching the hill, Rajkumar looked for green grass. And he found it in the northern hillside. Then he let his sheep stay there to eat grass. One hour later, suddenly it started to rain heavily. To let his sheep escape the rain, Rajkumar led them to a cave nearby. And he tied them there, preventing them from running away.
When the rain became less heavy, feeling bored, Rajkumar left the cave and walked around. Soon he came to the western hillside. He found another cave there. And to his amazement, he saw many big wild goats inside the cave, which were also taking shelter from rain. Rajkumar thought if he could have these goats, he’d be the richest man in his village. So, he decided to use grass to attract them to his village. He knew there was little chance of success because the local wild goats feared humans and didn’t have much trust in humans. But he still wanted to have a try.
Since there was no fresh grass nearby, he came back to the previous hillside and started collecting grass. Soon Rajkumar managed to find a lot of grass. However, he found he didn’t have a rope to tie it. Looking at his sheep he had tied with a rope, he decided to untie them and use the rope to tie the grass. Although that meant the sheep would later probably run away, thinking about so many goats, he thought it was a risk worth taking. So Rajkumar untied his sheep. He tied the grass using the rope.
Carrying the grass, he came to the cave where the wild goats stayed.

Writing 1
Shadow’s back fur rose. Down came the group of dogs towards us, roaring angrily. Just as one of them approached us, I raised the pepper spray and spray the liquid to it. Luckily it jumped aside. However, more dogs charged at me, which made the pepper spray useless. Just then, Jesse went up bravely and threw the thick branches around us, making it difficult for the dogs to move near. Meanwhile, Shadow shouted at the dogs aggressively in an attempt to scare them away.
Surprisingly, the entire mass of dogs turned tail and fled. I was glad to see them disappear. I thanked Jesse for her bravery and I patted Shadow on his back. While he was bigger than those dogs, he was not afraid in face of the mass of dogs. We continued to set off to search for our trail. This time, with Shadow leading the way, we would not get lost and soon we found the right trail. After the adventure, we returned home safe and sound thanks to my brave son and the biggest dog.

The voice on the other end was that of a young woman. After describing the dog to her in detail, she immediately wanted to come over. I said that my daughters love it very much and meanwhile apologized for not having contacted her a few days before. 30 minutes later, the bell rang and Molly was barking. I opened the door, forcing myself to face it.
I asked the woman to come in and she quickly bent over and hugged Molly tightly. Molly started wagging its tail and barking excitedly as if it had recognized someone familiar. Surprised and excited, the woman told me that she couldn’t sleep well without it and thanked us for keeping her dog for these days. She offered to give me some cash as a reward, but I refused. After she took Molly away, I cracked a smile. I knew I had done the right thing―that puppy was exactly where she belonged.

In fact, recently many local homes had been broken in on the weekend. Most people’s wallets and purses had been stolen.

When the police officer left, he said we should reward Rhubarb with a big steak dinner. Rhubarb lived to be almost 12 years old, but that night was the only time she barked in her entire life. I begin to encourage others to develop the environmental awareness. I know that there is power in numbers, and I want to get as many people involved as possible. I’ve convinced my children to take action with me like I did before. We learn to make many cards to hand out to people, with some words about environment protection written on them. We’ve also set up signs around the lake to remind people to pay attention to the environment. Other members of my family also go to the lake to pick up garbage on weekends.
Many days have passed, and the surroundings have improved a lot. Thanks to our efforts, the lake has taken on a new look. The surroundings are clearer and there is no more garbage floating on its water. There is little garbage on either side of the road along the lake. It is surprising that many people take their garbage away. Few people drop garbage here. I am pleased to note that more people actively volunteer to pick up the garbage. This gives us more confidence to protect our nearby environment.

【答案】One possible version:
On Monday, they managed to call 911 but forgot to ask how to communicate with the rangers (护林员) before losing signal. They set up what was left of the tent as best they could and stayed where they were, praying for the early arrival of their salvation. But for several days, they watched beyond all hope as high winds prevented the rangers’ attempts at a helicopter rescue. Their food was running out and they shared a single bottle of snow melt each day. Then an icefall buried their tent platform and squeezed them together. It was impossible to climb down.
On Wednesday, they gathered everything and decided to carry on with their climb. They climbed up slowly and carefully, resting when they were weak. It didn’t take long until the wind froze them in place. That was the scariest moment. Their spirits began to sink and they started to doubt if they could continue. Kart thought of all the people who loved him, and it really hit him they must be worried. As he tried to climb again and again, he just kept yelling out to his friends, “We have to get there.”However, as they got onto the final slope to the summit, the weather cleared. Suddenly, a helicopter appeared out of nowhere. They were rescued.

The next morning, John found Aunt Letty waiting outside with Hercules. Running towards them with excitement, John asked Aunt Letty if he could take a ride with her and she nodded approval. So John sat in front of Aunt Letty and they headed slowly towards the riverbank nearby. On arrival, John was totally absorbed in the idyllic scenery: The river water slipped twinkling in the sunlight. The banks were lined with willows, gently swaying in the wind. A refreshing breeze was blowing gently. John closed his eyes, breathing in the earthy smell of soil and appreciating the birdsong. A sense of inner peace he had never experienced in the city swept over him then.
Fascinated by the breathtaking scenery in the countryside, John obviously changed a lot after the ride. He no longer frowned at work but fulfilled his assigned tasks on the farm devotedly instead. When the farm was finally quiet, he would ride Hercules with Aunt Letty / gallop with Aunt Letty, trotting around the beautiful farmland and inhaling the sweet country air. Soon, it was time for John to say goodbye. He stroked Hercules on the neck softly, hugged Aunt Letty and said, “My parents are right. The life here is a great experience for me. Could I spend my next spring break here?” Aunt Letty smiled and said yes.

My pulse was weakening with the sun set. All I had to do was close my eyes. It seemed only minutes later I heard my neighbor Robin as well as the helicopter overhead. The rescue crew landed and made their way down to me. It took them 45 minutes to cut me out of the car and get me up the valley. We flew to the hospital in the helicopter and I got all sorts of tests and X-rays.
Robin brought Honey to the hospital the next day. She got right up next to me on the bed. With her there, my pain disappeared. “It was the strangest thing,” Robin told me later. “I got home from work and Honey was waiting for me. She ran in circles, like she was trying to tell me something.” Robin figured she’d bring Honey back to my house, and that’s when she dialed 911. How grateful I was for Honey, a life-saving hero in my heart.
